Biography

Marija Jeftić, PhD. (Maiden name- Nevenić), was born on 9 9. 1977. in Belgrade, where she finished elementary school and Third Belgrade High School. She finished undergraduate studies at the Department of Spatial Planning, Faculty of Geography, University of Belgrade in 2002. year, and graduate studies in 2006. Master thesis titled The importance of Belgrade in the regional integration of Southeast Europe, she defended in 2008. and earned the academic degree of MS in spatial planning. PhD thesis entitled: The functional urban region – an instrument of polycentric spatial development of Serbia, she reported in 2008 and defended at the Faculty of Geography, University of Belgrade in 2013, which whom she was eligible to be promoted into an academic title of PhD in spatial planning. She was elected into position of Assistant Professor in 2014. Marija R. Jeftić is fluent in English and French. On two occasions, with the aim of professional training, she had a practical work (internship) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich – Eidgenössische Technische Hochcshule Zürich), for a total of four months (August 2001, June-August 1997).

During 2002 she was a fellow of the Center for urban Development and Planning (CEP) and from 2003. until 2005., a scholar of the Ministry of Science and Environment, at the Faculty of Geography on the project Geographical development basis of the Republic of Serbia. Since January 2006. she was engaged as an assistant (teaching assistant from 2006-2008) at the Department for Spatial Planning were she conducted practical work for 8 teaching subjects. Since 2020, she is a full time engaged as an Associate Professor at the Department for Spatial Planning at the Faculty of Geography, University of Belgrade were she teaches 6 undergraduate subjects, 2 master subjects (Regional processes in spatial planning and GIS analysis in planning and arrangement of space) and 1 PhD subject at the same Department (Instruments of Regional Development Planning). Her scientific and professional specializations are: principles and methods of regionalization, spatial and regional development, regional policy, urban and rural renewal, spatial analyses and geostatistics (GIS in spatial and regional planning). Alone or with co-authors she published 55 papers in national and international scientific journals and proceedings from scientific and professional conferences. She is the author of two scientific monographs: The importance of Belgrade in regional integration of Southeast Europe and Functional urban region- instrument of polycentric spatial development in Serbia, published in 2019. She participated in preparation of 10 spatial plans, 6 other spatial planning documents and 3 scientific research projects financed by Ministry of science and environmental protection, bilateral project (Serbia-Slovenia) and in ongoing Horizon project „Foster Research Excellence for Green Transition in the Western Balkans“. She lectured three times by invitation (in Slovenia and Austria). She is a member of the Association of Spatial Planners of Serbia and the Serbian Geographical Society. She has undergone several trainings in the field of geographic information systems (ESRI certificates – Introduction to GIS (course 1) and Basic work processes (course 2). She is a member of the Academic Council of Sciences and Mathematics (2014-2018 and 2021- ).

  • Second prize in the student competition Regulation of the Street Boulevard of the Revolution (in Belgrade, Serbia) within the Scientific and Professional Symposium Communications, Center for Urban Development Planning (CEP), Belgrade, 2001.
  • Annual Award for the best graduation project in the field of spatial planning in 2002 by Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of Serbia, Belgrade.
