Циљ предмета

This course aims to enable students to acquire the basic methodological knowledge needed for understanding and analysis of sustainable development, as well as to contribute to the acquisition of knowledge about sustainability challenges (in natural and social segments). At the same time, through theoretical and practical teaching, students are trained to raise awareness of the importance of methods and theories, and the consequences of the choice of methods for a given research task. In addition to acquiring theoretical and methodological knowledge, the aim of the course is for students to recognize the complexity of the concept and notice local and global challenges of the process of sustainable development: natural, social, economic inequalities, the existence of vulnerable groups. The focus of this course is on essential aspects of sustainability science such as transdisciplinary and action research.

Исход предмета

Upon completion of this course, students are able to: (1) Identify and classify various sources of databases and software tools for further analysis, (2) Interpret the results of spatio-temporal analyses, (3) Formulate research questions and develop research ideas, and in accordingly, use adequate techniques for data collection and develop adequate research methods, (4) Independently formulate a document of recommendations in accordance with the goals of sustainable development.

Theory

1-2. Overview of web platforms with available climatology and meteorology databases and software packages for spatio-temporal analysis; 3. Methodology of monitoring and collecting meteorological and climatological data (remote detection, in situ, mobile measurements); 4. Overview of web platforms and software packages for accessing and analyzing data in ecology; 5. Methods of collecting and analyzing data related to the field of ecology; 5. Preservation of relief and ecosystem services; 6-7. Georisk management and climate change adaptation; 8. Sustainable land use; 9. Research and monitoring of geomorphological processes; 10. Sustainable management of landscapes and geomorphological resources; 11. Goals of sustainable development and inclusive development; 12-13. Indicators of sustainable development; 14. Application of quantitative methodology in the study of social disciplines; 15. Application of qualitative methodology in the study of social disciplines.

 

Practical learning

– Using web platforms and software tools to collect and analyze geospatial data from climatology, meteorology and ecology;

– Using remote sensing to analyze geospatial data;

– Examples of the use of field methods of geomorphological analysis in support of sustainable development (prospecting, field analysis, creation of photo-documentation, recording of GPS data, creation of sketches, etc.);

– Examples of data classification;

– Examples of time series data analysis;

– Work on data with the use of certain software tools;

– Analysis of case studies;

– Creating techniques for data collection in quantitative and qualitative research;

– Formulation of recommendations that would integrate the goals of sustainable development in a specific case.
